The Museum has an important educational role and engages the NTU Community by providing opportunities for participation in special art projects. The Museum also brings art to the Community through an active Public Art program. Quantum LOGOS (vision serpent)

Directed by Mark Chavez

Quantum LOGOS (vision serpent) is an immersive reactive film that uses Mesoamerican culture as inspiration for design ideas used to explore quantum mechanics basics.

This project uses abstract animated imagery to metaphorically represent the quantum world. I use this approach because of the parallels that are evident in the art and philosophy of Mesoamerica to the quantum mechanics vision of the nature of reality. While I focus on Young’s Double Slit Experiment,1 how light behaves when passed through double slits, as part of this project research, I found additional inspiration in the Observer Effect.2These two phenomena are core issues relevant to this artwork that I use to explain quantum mechanics. I wanted to present new ideas through the ancient artistic interpretation of natural wonders to attest to their intuitive assumptions’ timeless beauty and similarity to current notions. By using designs that are rooted in ideas embraced by Mesoamerican thought, I’ve created a series of visual metaphors that explore, discover, and communicate the counterintuitive and contradictory beauty of nature.

Art & Science in Animation

Chrysalis

Directed by Ina Conradi Chavez, co-Directed by Mark Chavez

Based on an old legend about the butterfly‘s struggles to evolve, the film symbolizes the human innate drive to survive.

A transmedia research project that was planned as one part game, one part animated series.
Chrysalis is my fifth short film. The idea for Chrysalis started in 2014. I wanted to follow up the abstract and surreal structure of my earlier film, Elysian Fields (2013), and continue developing the story about life and death, the theme of perseverance, metamorphosis, and immorality. Going through emotionally tough times personally, I wanted Chrysalis to instil hope and to reflect on many topics such as life’s purpose, the meaning of the universe, the human desire to explore, the inner workings of the mind, consciousness studies, seeking enlightenment, understanding metaphysical, handling emotional pain and defeat. However, the metaphysical quickly expanded to evil, dehumanization, totalitarian governments, and environmental disasters.
The production started in 2015 March in tight collaboration with co-director and animation veteran Mark Chavez, Giant Monster, an animation, visual arts, and game company. Joshua Tan, founder of Crave FX, the best VFX studio in Singapore. Work on the film was conducted parallel to their hectic production commitment to other commercial projects over a period of a year and a half. The lead animator and artist in CraveFX were Yi Hui, one of the most talented and inspiring young artists. The sounds and music were made by Jeremy Goh, founder and his team in IMBA Interactive….I hope to continue to work with them in the future!
